Post Surgery Rehabilitation

What is post surgery rehabilitation?

Post surgical rehabilitation, as the name suggests, is a set of physiotherapy regimens followed after surgery to improve the patient’s quality of life. It includes exercises, hands-on therapy, and stretching to help patients get their lives back on track.

With our specialists, you’ll learn the best and safest ways to walk, bathe, get dressed, and take care of yourself. You’ll also receive exercises to strengthen your muscles and improve the movement of the part of your body where you had surgery.

This rehabilitation can speed your recovery, regardless of the type of operation, be it a joint replacement, heart surgery, or a procedure to treat cancer. You’ll likely begin while you’re still in the hospital, where our therapist will help you get out of bed and start walking again. You’ll also perform other exercises to prepare you for going home.

Some patients might think or hope that the rehabilitation tips provided in the hospital are sufficient for recovery. Unfortunately, that’s not the case; a commitment to rehabilitation for several months is often necessary.

Our program can help after the following types of surgeries:

  • Orthopedic (bone, joint, and muscles)
  • Obstetric and gynecological (postnatal, hysterectomy, etc.)
  • Spinal and neurological (disc repairs and replacements, brain surgery, spinal)
  • Abdominal and thoracic (lungs, heart, liver, gastrointestinal system, and other organs)
  • Breast (resections and reconstructions)
  • Urological (bladder and prostate)

When and Where is it Needed?

This program starts right after surgery. In many cases, the patient cannot come to the clinic. That’s why the physiotherapy professionals at Gaur Physiotherapy offer home services, visiting the patient’s house daily to provide the necessary care.

Our experts communicate with the respective surgeon to plan a set of treatments that will improve the post-surgery condition over time.

The treatment might include the following activities:

  • Hands-on mobilization and massage
  • Guided and at-home exercises
  • Hot and Cold Therapy
  • Electrical stimulation and TENS
  • Laser and light therapy
  • Other techniques as needed

Post-surgery rehabilitation helps to:

  • Improve movement and range of motion in the affected part of your body
  • Strengthen your muscles
  • Reduce pain
  • Assist you in walking again—first with crutches or a walker, and then on your own
  • Teach you to perform daily activities, such as climbing stairs, getting up from a chair or bed, getting in and out of a car, getting dressed, and bathing
  • Manage your pain and discomfort
  • Strengthen and stretch muscles
  • Improve circulation and range of motion
  • Reduce anxiety and regain confidence

The million-dollar question is how long post-surgery rehabilitation takes. This is not easy to answer, as each patient and each situation is different. Recovery may take from one month to half a year or even a full year for a complete recovery.

At Gaur Physiotherapy, we have expert physiotherapists who are highly experienced in the field and can help you with your conditions.
